Board of Directors:

The TCCBE Board strives to maintain a broad geographic and sectoral representation of Peterborough and Haliburton Counties. Meetings are held monthly to make policy governance decisions and provide strategic guidance and support to this incorporated organization and its staff.

Marie Gage, Past President
Marie is an occupational therapist by profession who currently runs a cottage resort with her husband in Haliburton County. She has been involved with U-Links since 2000 and with the Trent Centre for Community Based Education since approximately 2001. She was a member of the three-person implementation board when TCCBE incorporated and moved from being chair of the management committee to president and chair of the board. I am committed to the work of this organization because of the impact it has on social and economic development. Having the resources of a University available to a small rural area such as Haliburton has a far reaching impact on the inhabitants of the county. By being a part of the board of directors of this organization I am able to guide the work of the organization in a direction that is most profitable for the community at large and development of the students who interact with the organization.

David Hollier, Director
David graduated in 1966 from the Naval Technical College in Esquimalt B.C. and has many years experience in human resources management specializing in both policy and development and long-term resource forecasting. His area of expertise was related to the engineering, procurement and construction industry with companies such as Bechtel and SNC-Lavalin. David relocated to the Peterborough area in 1983 and graduated from Sir Sandford Fleming College in 1986. He then spent many years in voice data communications and was instrumental in the Durham Region merging of medical facilities with Oshawa General Hospital. He is currently semi-retired and runs a small construction business.

A graduate of Ryerson's journalism program, Patricia Bell-Newson has worked with CTV National News, a leading Canadian footwear manufacturer, and Cadillac Fairview Shopping Centres. She has also worked with Ontario's second largest opera company where she directed the organization's marketing and communications activity and generated dramatic revenue increases. More recently, Patricia has provided strategic writing, marketing and communications services to a variety of organizations including: Agriculture and Agri-Foods Canada, Bayshore Shopping Centre, Calian Technology Limited and Canada Post Corporation…to name a few. Patricia is also serving her third term as a Board Member of the Ontario Lung Association, headquartered in Toronto, and chairs the provincial organization’s Marketing/Development Committee. Patricia also sits on the Boards of the Trent Centre for Community-Based Education, The Peterborough Symphony Orchestra and the Art Gallery of Peterborough.

CBE Peterborough Committee:

The CBE Peterborough Committee is the Local Community Advisory Committee for Peterboorugh City and County region.

Responsibilities

• To identify, convey and champion the needs and interests of Peterborough City and County through TCCBE programs and services from a broad group of advisors/contributors (e.g. citizens and community organizations in Peterborough City and County).
• Ensure all projects that are proposed by the community and accepted under the auspices of the TCCBE involve broad community benefit as outlined in the TCCBE Procedure: “Proposal Review Process.”
• Undertake periodic consultation with local TCCBE participants and the general public.
• Develop an annual work plan that outlines specific Committee activities for the coming year.

Membership

Members are drawn from local participants in TCCBE activities who live and/or work in Peterborough City and County, or individuals who can demonstrate a strong commitment to reflect the diversity of the community. The CBE Peterborough Committee represents a wide cross section of geographical communities, communities of interest and business sectors in Peterborough City and County and include two to three members from academic institutions for information and advice purposes. Membership will be subject to renewal on an annual basis.

2010-11 Committee Members

Ann McLeod (Chair) earned her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from McGill University, and a Master’s in Public Health in Health Education from University of Michigan. Her nursing practice in adolescent and pediatric tertiary, residential camp and home-based settings in both urban and rural areas in Canada, New Zealand and the U.S. spurred her interest in health promotion and community based research. She has taught at University of Michigan, Lake Superior State University and in the Trent/Fleming School of Nursing since it’s inception in 2001. Her research interests are the use of arts in education and support for rural caregivers.

Michal Avram teaches in the International Development Studies program at Trent. She began her interest in community development as an organizer in Toronto's west end immigrant neighbourhoods in the 1970s, spent the 1980s working on local economic development projects in Israel and Kenya and as the national economic development planner for Israel's participatory community development program, Project Renewal. In the 1990s she returned to school earning a Masters in International Development and a doctorate in Economic Geography from Clark University. She taught Geography and International Relations at Mt Allison University and has been at Trent since 2007.

Dawn Berry-Merriam has over 30 years experience in community planning. She was the City of Peterborough’s first Manager of Social Planning, she worked for 13 years with the local District Health Council, where she was the Associate Executive Director, after which she assumed the position of Manager of Support Services first for Marycrest Home for the Aged and then the recently built St. Joseph’s At Fleming. In 2006, Dawn returned to her roots of social planning and community development and assumed the position of Research & Policy Analyst with the Peterborough Social Planning Council.

Al Brunger is a Professor Emeritus in the Geography Department at Trent University. His research interests are in historical cultural geography within both Canada and overseas. He has supervised numerous community-based student research projects throughout his time at Trent.

Amanda Dibbits earned her BA in Politics at Trent University and has since dedicated herself to the Peterborough community. She has been the Administrative Assistant to the CAO & Warden of the County of Peterborough for the past 3 years, focusing her work on community involvement and social politics. Also involved in the Peterborough Poverty Reduction initiative and the Red Cross, she enjoys working in teams and committees to brainstorm ideas and positive outcomes for the community.

Megan Hornseth holds a Bachelor of Science (Biology) from the University of Guelph (2005).  After she graduated, Megan continued her love of biology by studying various wildlife species across North America. In 2007 she returned to research in a more formal program and she is now in her 4th year of a Ph.D. Program at Trent University in the Environmental and Life Sciences Program at Trent University.  Her research interests include conservation biology, wildlife ecology and management, and landscape ecology.

Yvonne Lai is the Outreach Coordinator for the New Canadians Centre. She is responsible for promoting the Peterborough Partnership Council on Immigrant Integration and the New Canadians Centre in the community through public speaking activities and community collaborations. 

Yvonne was born in Singapore and came to Peterborough in 1998 to begin her studies in Psychology and English Literature at Trent University. Her doctoral studies in Social Psychology at York University focused on factors which motivate immigrants’ participation and engagement in small urban communities. She has volunteered in various capacities with organizations such as the Kawartha Sexual Assault Centre, YWCA Y’s Buys, and the Community and Race Relations Committee of Peterborough.

Judith Mintz holds a Bachelor of Fine Arts (Visual Arts) degree from York University, 1994. After completing a 2, 200 hour Shiatsu Therapy training program and Yoga Teacher Training in 2000, working in the field of holistic health and having two daughters, Judith enrolled at Trent to upgrade her undergraduate degree with the intention of applying to the Bachelor of Education program. She soon discovered that her hunger for research, discussion and writing was bigger than becoming a teacher and decided to enroll in the Canadian Studies Diploma. Currently, Judith is in her last term of the Diploma and is working on a TCCBE project for one of her courses. She hopes to attend Graduate school at the Frost Centre next year. Her research interests include women and midwifery, marginalized populations and diaspora. Judith continues to teach yoga and do shiatsu therapy in her spare time.
